Knife Award 2020
The award’s motto for 2020 was “the perfect cooking knife”. We received 27 submissions from Germany, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Russia, and the USA, from young knife makers to “old veterans”. The jury consisted of Dr. Isabell Immel (director Deutsches Klingenmuseum), Curt Mertens (Stiftung Freunde des Deutschen Klingenmuseums), Wilfried Gorski (Deutsche Messermacher Gilde) and Thorsten Steinhaus (professional chef from Solingen). The choice was more than difficult, many of the submissions were of the highest level. Finally, a winner was chosen:
Dakota Slack from the USA convinced the jury. The young knife maker combined a 360-layer random damascene blade with raised nickel silver and brass spacers, and a handle of South American ipé burl wood. The perfect craftsmanship, the beautiful lines, and the excellent handling and balance were especially impressing. Congratulations!
Honorary mentions go to Vlad Matveev (Russia) und Pekka Tuominen (Finland). Matveev’s knife features a spectacular damascene blade, and an otherwise plain, but highly functional design. Tuominen’s submission surprises with an unusual form that is perfect to use, and a hilt that is incredibly smooth to the hand.
A great “Thank you!” to all participants!
